There are three general methods you can use to exfoliate at home: mechanical, chemical and enzyme exfoliation. Manual mechanical exfoliation can be performed using different types of peels including exfoliating masks, scrubs, gels, lotions or a soft washcloth. Using any one of these ways of exfoliation you should make sure it matches your skin type and gentle enough not to irritate the skin.
Mechanical peel is the most effective and safe for the normal skin type, but is mostly unsuitable for sensitive and acne types.
Choosing an mechanical exfoliator you should remember that it is very important to use only the gentle mechanical peels and never apply body scrubs on your face. Also it’s better to look for scrub with round scrubbing particles which are smooth enough and don’t cause irritation. These scrubbing particles can be made form the different kinds of natural and synthetic materials, for example fragmented nut shells, jojoba beads or synthetic particles. Usually synthetic granules are more safe because they are round and don’t have such a sharp edges as natural beads.
Other important things to remember are:
- the steam bath before peel procedure
- wash the face with cold water after the peel
- when you use peels too often your skin becomes more sensitive to other cosmetic products and sun
- always apply sunscreen cosmetics after the exfoliation
