Major Signs of Over Exfoliation

Over exfoliation phenomenon

Daily mechanical peels involving scrub application can lead to over exfoliation which has its specific signs. Abrasive particles chafing the skin remove dead epithelium cells. This vital procedure helps in cleaning the skin which consists of living cells permanently dying and giving place to younger ones. Old cells accumulation can cause bad skin looks and provoke comedones. That’s why they are to be removed.

Though, too frequent mechanical peels can have destructive consequences and lead to over exfoliation. Excess scrubbing is proved to cause irritation and inflammation, and fasten derma aging. Thus, it is better not to over exfoliate.

Many scrubs employ such rough components as milled walnut shells, blended sea shells or even small particles of plastic for better action. Study of American Association of Dermatology has proven that frequent exfoliation has harmful effect. Experiment participants have been subjected to mechanical peels once a day for three days. Then their skin has been examined. Derma surface has appeared to possess scratches, be irritated and inflamed.

Therefore, correct scrubbing is a secret of wholesome skin.

Exfoliation frequency and application tips

Remember that dry skin shells at higher rates and has wider layer of dead epithelium cells on its surface. One with such skin type should exfoliate a couple of times weekly. Those who have combined or oily skin shouldn’t scrub more than once a week to prevent over exfoliation. While sensitive skin is incompatible with any mechanical peel.

Apply scrubs with circular movements avoiding pressing on skin. It is impossible to rub blemishes away. Exfoliation has the only purpose – to digest dead epithelium cells making skin clean, healthy and young by appearance.

Over exfoliation has opposite impact. It takes off too many cells provoking excessive oil secretion destined to restore reduced skin protection.
