Widespread peels component, citric acid, is a type of alpha hydroxy acids (in abbreviated form AHAs). AHAs are naturally obtained organic carboxylic acids. They peel delicately and are often used to treat such skin conditions as fine lines and wrinkles, hyper- and depigmentation, spots and excessively dry skin. AHAs can be applied daily in small concentrations together with facial wash or emollients for skin surface improvement.
Following fruit acids can be distinguished: citric acids (obtained from citruses), glycolic acid (occurs in sugar cane), lactic acid (acknowledged as fruit acid even though it is obtained from milk), malic (occurs in apples) and tartaric (found in grapes).
Such fruits as lemons, limes, oranges and pineapples embody citric acid. It contributes to the peculiar taste of citruses. Though, fruits rich in citric acid still differ in taste: lemons and limes are bitterer while oranges and tangerines are less bitter. Some berries, such as raspberries and blackberries contain it as well. Citric acid can also be industrially obtained in powder form.
Many health-and-beauty aids, especially cleansers and peels, contain citric acid. It is often employed for so called bath bombs or bath tablets together with sodium bicarbonate. Their reaction contributes to carbon dioxide occurrence, which provides fizzy effect. Large number of skin peels, masks and lotions contain citric acid as well.
Citric acid peel merits and demerits
Noninvasive and weak citric peels are simple and successful in skin blemishes treatment. Vitamin C is known as antioxidant due to its ability to refresh the skin and mask signs of aging by exfoliating gently, boosting young skin growth and terminating free radicals reaction. Citric acids have good solubility properties.
Although, you may need to undergo peeling procedure for a several times to achieve set results. You should be aware of some AHA application consequences: long contact may provoke skin reddening, tingling, slight irritation and dryness. Citric acid peel is not the best solution for sensitive skin.
